What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Appointment
Establishing An Early, Healthy Start To Good Dental Hygiene
A Comfortable Start to a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles
Whether your child has been referred by your dentist, you’ve noticed changes in their smile, or you’re simply following the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation for an evaluation around age 7, we’re excited to welcome your family to Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics Collective.
We know visiting an orthodontist for the first time can bring plenty of questions. The good news? Your first orthodontic appointment is relaxed, informative, and designed to help you understand your child’s smile, not pressure you into treatment.
Our goal is simple: help you feel confident, informed, and comfortable every step of the way.
Your First Visit: Step by Step
Step 1
A Warm Welcome
From the moment you walk through our doors, you’ll be greeted by a friendly team that genuinely enjoys working with children, teens, and families. We’ll help you get checked in, review any necessary paperwork, and answer any questions before your visit begins.
Our locally owned practice is committed to creating a positive experience from the very first appointment because we believe great orthodontic care starts with trust.
Step 2
Getting to Know You
Every smile is unique, so your orthodontist will take time to learn about your concerns and goals before discussing treatment.
We’ll talk about things like:
- What concerns you or your dentist have noticed
- Bite or jaw development
- Crowding or spacing
- Thumb sucking or oral habits, if applicable
- Previous dental history
- Any questions you have about braces, Invisalign®, or future treatment
No question is too small. We want you to leave your first appointment feeling informed and confident.
Step 3
Digital Records & Examination
To better understand your smile, we’ll complete a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation.
Depending on your needs, this may include:
- Digital X-rays
- Digital photographs
- A digital 3D scan (instead of messy impressions in many cases)
- A thorough examination of your teeth, bite, jaw alignment, and facial growth
These records allow your orthodontist to accurately evaluate your smile and determine whether treatment is recommended now or if continued growth should simply be monitored.
Step 4
Your Personalized
Treatment Plan
After completing your evaluation, your orthodontist will review everything with you in clear, easy-to-understand language.
If treatment is recommended, we’ll explain:
- Whether treatment should begin now or later
- The type of orthodontic treatment that’s best for your smile
- Estimated treatment timeline
- Expected results
- Financial options and insurance information
- Any next steps
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my child get braces at the first appointment?
Usually not. The first visit is focused on evaluating your child’s smile, identifying any concerns, and determining whether treatment is needed now or in the future.
How long does the first orthodontic appointment take?
Most first orthodontic consultations take about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on whether diagnostic records are needed.
Does the consultation hurt?
Not at all. The appointment is non-invasive and consists primarily of an examination, digital imaging, and a conversation about your smile.
What should we bring?
Please bring:
- Insurance information (if applicable)
- Any referral from your dentist
- A list of current medications or medical conditions
- Your questions—we’re happy to answer them!
